Circus Costumes

These are circus stilt costumes. The style of the outfit has a blazer for the top and long trousers for the bottom. The colours are very bright and bold. The patterns are of flowers. I could use this ocostume on my outcome by looking at the printed flowers and using the printing technique on my final piece.

Steampunk is new to me, I think it may be genious and weird at the same time

This is a steam punk circus costume. It is very dark and bold. There are swirly and clock patterns on the costume. The style of the sleeves are puffy. The top is a corset. The colours look rich such as browns, golds and silvers. I could use this costume on my costume by looking at the style of the top and sleeves.

This is a circus cycle act. The costumes are very bright and colourful. The colours used are green, blue, yellow, red and purple. The patterns are floral. The overal look of the outfit looks like a butterfly. The style of the outfit are skin tight. I could look at this and use it on my final garment by looking at the bright colours and the dying technique.
These are circus acrabatic costumes. The costumes are very plain and simple because the act requires alot of movement. The style of the out fit is mostly either skin tight or really flaired. This pattern on this costume is stipes and the colours used are red and black. I could look at this costume and use it on my own by looking at the stipey designs.

This is a neck piece from the deck of cards costume. The color is gathered which looks like a flower. The patterns used on it are floral. The fabric used is netted. The colour of this is red/ pink. This inspires me because I could use it on my costume for the color design.
These circus costumes are butterfly stilt walkers costumes. The costumes are very colourful and bright. The colours that stand out in the outfit are blue, pink, yellow and orange. The patterns on the costumes are of different random shapes. I could use this on my garment by looking at the big wings and shapes and colours.

This is a womens magician costume. The style of the costume is like a top, hat and tails costume but with a dress. The are rich colours used on this costume such as red, burgundy and cream. The patterns on the costume are floral designs. I could look at the printed design technique and use it on to my own design.

This is a circus hoola hoop act. The style of the dress is like a night dress. It looks very elegant. The top of th dress looks pleated and the skirt of the dress is flared. The colour is very dark purple. I could use this outfit to use as inspiration by looking at the hoola hoop shapes and putting it into my own costume.

This is a animal ring master circus costume. The style of the top of the dress has a blazer and corset. The skirt of the dress is gathered with frills at the bottom like a curtain. The colours on this outfit are rich and classy, colours such as gold, black and red. This costume inspires me because I really like the frills on the skirt and thats something I could take and use onto my costume.
This circus costume has a merical round as the skirt. The colour of the costume is multi-coloured which is very colourul and bright. The dress only has one sleeve which is puffy. The patterns on the costume are mainly stirpes in different colours. I could look at this and take inspiration from it for my own final design by looking at the stripey patterns and the colourful colours.

This circus costume looks very wild and aggressive. The skirt is like a hemed skirt which looks like it has been teared. the fabrics have been layers with different colours such as pink and black to give it a rough effect. The colours look dull because of the black netting. The colours on this outfit are purple, black and pink. I could use the teared effect on my own design to make it look funky.
These circus outfits are of show girls. They have alot of feathers at the back of the skirt and a feathery scarf around their neck. The style of the top is like a corset. The bottom of the outfit is long white stockings. The colours are very suttle such as light blues and light pink. I really like the feathers used on this outfit, I could use this as an inspiration by using feathers on my costume.

This circus costume is very bright and colourful. It has colours such as yellow, orange, blue and green. the style of the skirt is layered and pleated. The sleeves are not attached to the dress and are like cuff bands. I really like the style of the skirt on this costume, I could look at the layering technique and use it onto my own costume.
This cirus costume is of a fortune teller costume. The colours used on this costume is only purple, however the purple is in different tones from light to dark. The style of the costume is very jipsy, the skirt is gathered with different layers of purple tones. The outfit also contains gold circle tassles. I could use this as an inspiration by looking at different tones on a colour and mixing and matching them.

This circus costume is of a joker in a girls version. The colours used on this outfit are blue, silver and finishes off with red accessories such as the shoes and head piece. The style of the outfit is skin tight fabric which fits right onto the body and brings out the figure, the outfit also has a spikey color. The pattern used on this costume is diamond checkered. I really like how the suit is one piece, thats something I could look at for my own design.

Love her outfit! #aerialsilks
The style of this circus act costume is also fitted tight to bring out the figure. I think this is because the act involves alot of movements and flexability so this means the fabric used on the costumes is very stretchy. The colours used are purple and black. I really like the lace fabric on this costume and how it stands out from the bright purple, that is something I could think about using on my own costume by contrasting fabrics and colours.
by Amy Lind
This circus costume is of a show girl. The style of this outfit is like a swimsuit with feathers coming out from the back. The costume is very gramorous and glittery. The colours used on this showgirl outfit are pink and blue. I like this costume because it reminds me of a colourful bird because of the long feathers on the back of the outfit and the head pice. I could use this costume as an inspiration by looking at the gems and shiney colours to make my costume glamorous.

Boo Boo Circus Clown Costume
This circus costume is of a girly clown. The costume as bright eye catching colours such as yellow, orange and green. The style of the skirt is gathered and layered. The style of the sleeves are flared. The costume also has big green pom-poms on the top made to look like funny buttons. I could use the style of the sleeves technique on my own design to make it flared..

This circus costume is of a diamond club card. The patterns on the outfit is of shapes such as diamonds and squares. The colour of the outfit is red, black and white. The style of skirt is gathered. The style of the sleeves are puffy. I could use this as an inpiration by printing block patterns onto my own costume.

The style of the skirt is puffy. The straps of the dress go from the waist which is sort of like a dungaree. I could use this as an inspiration by looking at the style of the dress and using it onto my own.

This circus costume is of a joker for women. The costume looks very evil. There are dark, bold colours used on the costume such as red, black and white. the patterns used are checkered and diamonds. The colours in each side of the outfit are opposite. The style of the skirt of the dress is layers and long. The skirt has a teared apart. The sleevs of the dress is long and fitted like gloves. The style of the top of the dress is like a corset. I really like the dark bold colours on this dress, thats something I could look at and think about using on my own costume.

Day In the Life

My Life in 1900

Dear Diary . . .

My name is Elizabeth and I live in England.
I am 19 years old. At the moment I live in a rich house with my parents. I am not married yet but my parents are looking for a rich gentleman so I can get engaged to him and live up to the family name. My father really chooses the gentleman whereas my mother respects his decisions because he is the man of the house. My mother’s job is to persuade me to marry him but I’m not sure if I’m quite ready yet. I guess I don’t have much of a choice.

Every morning I would wake up early in the morning and have a warm bath that the maids in the house would start up before I woke up and my mother would pick out my outfit for the day and the maids would dress me. My outfit would usually be a corset top with a big puffy skirt that is long to the ground. My corset would be very tight around the waist to show my figure and to look feminine and posh. My neck to the dress and sleeves would be very long so that there is no skin showing. Mother always says it is important to cover up because people here are very religious.

After breakfast I would get home taught by a private tutor. Even though I’m a girl education is very important because I come from a rich family. Mother always says I have to be smart and clever to bring up my own children and grow my own family one day.

At evening I would gather around with all the rich neighbours which are a friend of my mothers and have tea. I pretty much just sit around and listen to all the latest gossips. Sometimes I would sit with mother and hand stitch embroidery on a piece of cloth as a hobby. Another hobby I have is reading, I love reading and finding out the latest news on the news paper.

At weekends I would go to house parties with my parents where there is tea served with little cakes and sandwiches. The music that would be played is always calm and classical. There would usually be a pianist in the corner of the room playing classical music on the piano.
In parties and occasions I wear long dresses with a big matching hat and white gloves to keep myself covered and looking posh.

I would rather live in 2013 rather than 1900 because in 2013 women have equal rights as men and they can dress however they want without anybody judging them. However I really like the style of the dresses in 1900 because the dress has a corset with it which looks very elegant and I also like the big posh hats because it is very stylish.

Party Outfit Evaluation

Evaluation
For this project my task was to design and make a party outfit. The theme of my party dress I went for was a Louis Vuitton inspired dress to be worn in a red carpet.
Before designing and making the party outfit I have researched on different types of party dresses to see what types of dresses are in fashion in 2013. Researching the different party dresses I have found that there are lots of different styles on the dresses such as gatherings, pleating and layering, I particularly like the pleating technique in a skirt because it gives more movement to the skirt. I have also looked at different designers; my favourite designer I looked at was Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton dresses visually interest me because I like how the skirts of the dresses are short and pleated. I also like the colours used on Louis Vuitton dresses. The colours are rich and bold colours such as gold, black and cream.
Secondly, after researching on party outfits and artists I have looked through secondary sources such as fashion magazines and collected images by cut out images from the magazines of different styles of party dresses. I then mounted the images on a piece of A3 sheet creating a mood-board.
Thirdly, after I created a mood-board I had a more clear idea of what kind o party outfits was in fashion in 2013 and what type of look I would like to go for. To help me visualise the party look I have created a style board and I have put together a complete party outfit including the accessories.
After creating a mood-board and style board I then drew fashion flats of dresses all in different styles. I thought about different style techniques to put onto the dresses such as pleating, gatherings and layering’s, I also thought about what the length of the dresses were going to be.
Moreover, I then decided from the fashion flats which style of dress I wanted to go for. The style of the dress I chose was long sleeve lace top with a pleated knee length skirt. I chose this style because it reminds me of Louis Vuitton dresses from my research.  I then took that fashion flat design of the dress and drew a final fashion illustration of how I want the dress to look when it is made. I have added colours to my illustration, the colours I went for my party dress is gold and black. I have chosen these colours because they are glamorous and elegant.

Before making the final dress I have first made some samples of pleating and gatherings out of calico. I have made samples so that I have a perfect idea what I need to do when adding the style techniques to my dress such as pleating.

After making samples I have also made a toile of the top out of calico so that I know where all the darts and seams should go when I start making my final piece. It also gives me a clear idea of what size I want my dress to be.

The fabric I have bought for my dresses are black satin (£2.50 per metre) and gold and black lace (£3 per metre).
To begin making my dress I started off by cutting out pattern pieces for the top of my dress and marked out were the darts and seam allowance should exactly go.

Secondly, I used the pattern pieces as a guide to cut out my fabric to the exact shape and size I want for the top.

Thirdly, after I cut out the fabric the first thing I did was sew the darts in using a sewing machine. I added darts to the dress top so the fabric can fit nicely around the body and the curves.

After I sewed the darts in, I over-locked the sides of the fabric to stop the fabric from fraying and to neaten the edges. After I over-locked the sides I put the separate pieces of the top back to back on the right place facing the wrong way up and sewed the seam allowance (1.5cm) to attach the top together and make it one piece. I then turned the top over to the right side and I had a finished top. After that I then added long sleeves to the top. The fabric I used for the top and sleeves was gold and black lace inspired my Louis Vuitton dresses.

I then made another boob-tube top made out of black satin to go on top on the lace top.

After I completed making the top part of the dress I then started making the skirt of the dress. To make the skirt of the dress I placed the two fabrics, satin and lace on top of each other and added pleating at the top of the skirt. I then sewed the pleating using a sewing machine so they are secure in place. After that I grabbed the bottom of the skirt and folded the skirt in half way and hand stitched it under the skirt to give the skirt a puffier effect. After I had completed the skirt of the dress, I attached the skirt and the top together using the sewing machine.

Finally to finish the dress off I added a fastening to the back of the dress. The fastening I used for my dress was a zip. I have used a zip for the fastening because it is easy to get in and out of the dress without any struggle.

Overall I think my party outfit came out how I planned because the party dress looks like my final fashion illustration. My strength during the process in making the dress was making the skirt of the dress; this is because I practiced making pleating out of toile. The disadvantage in making the dress was making the top out of lace, this is because lace it a very difficult fabric to cut into. It was also quite difficult to sew onto lace using a sewing machine because it was a very stretchy fabric.

I think I could improve my party dress next time by adding some hand embroidery to it such as sequins or gems to make it look more glamorous.

1950s Vs 2013

Which decade would you prefer to live in and why?

The decade I would prefer to live in is 2013 because everyone has equal rights and women can dress however they want and people won’t look at them in a shocking way because women in the 1950s were quite covered and wore long dresses all the time. Another reason why I would like to live in 2013 rather than 1950s is because I like the fashion and style of the clothing such as jeans or pants with a top. Women in the 1950s wouldn't wear pants and tops because they wouldn’t think it was very feminine. Fashion in the 1950s wasn't very flexible, women wouldn't wear anything other than a dress or a big skirt because it was feminist whereas fashion in 2013 women can dress the way it suits them. They can mix and match different clothing such as shorts, skirts, tops and pants and nobody would look at them funny.

Project 1 Fashion Time-Line

 2013

Fashion in 2013 is now very modern. The style of the jeans that are very popular is skinny jeans which shows off the figure of the legs. You can now also get jeans in different colours and with printed patterns. The shoes are high boots that are knee length with high heels. The design on this top is block colours in sections. Accessorizing is very popular which complete the outfit such as matching handbads, bangles, necklaces and matching shoes etc.
1990s
The fashion trend in 1990s looks like everyone including men and female wore jeans with different coloured t-shirts. Patterns doesn't look like it was a trend in 1990's because everyone wore plain coloured t-shirts with different tones of denim pants.

1980's
Fashion in 1980's was very retro. Women had big hair and wore colourful highlighted clothes such as bright yellow, pink, blue, green etc. People wore colourful colours because colour had just been invented. The style of the clothes was tight coloured leggings, baggy jeans, white t-shits with printed designs on it and short jackets up to waist length.

1970's
In 1970's the fashion trend for women changed alot, women started wearing pants with tops and shirts. The style of the pants were flared which looks quite like skirts. The colour that looks popular in 1970's is purple. I think the colour purple was popular because it represents elegance, power and posh and women started getting jobs in offices and they had more power just like men and felt more important. The patterns in 1970's look simple but bold, the patterns are shapes such as stars that are all the same size repeated all over the garment.

1960's
The style of the dresses in 1960's was simple with no pleatings and gatherings, the dress was straight down to knee length. the neck of the dress was high up to the color bone or either has a color to it. the patterns are bold with prints of shaped like circles or floral. The colours look bright and have a summer feeling to it. Womens replaced hats with head bands and hair clips.

1950's
The style of the skirt part of the dress looks flared and puffed up. The neck of the dress still has a color. The patterns on the dress are floral and stripey and the colours are blue, white and red.

1940's
The style of the dress in 1940s changed completely due to the war. The length of the dress when up to knee length and the colours were very dull. The patterns looked realy simple like chequered. The neck of the dress also has a color.

1930's
The style of the dress in 1930's reveales a lot more skin. The figure of the bode shoes more and the dresses look quite posh and stylish. The colours of the dresses look like they are simple from natural fibres. The patterns in the dresses look like they have paisley designs on them.

1920's
In 1920's the style of the dresses looks like it has changed because the dresses are not long to the floor like 1900's, the length of the dress has changed just under knee length. The dresses look quite loose. The style of the hat has also changed. The colours still look quite simple from natural fibres and the patterns are floral and chequered, which has expanded from 1900's and 1910's.

1910's
The style of the dress in 1910's is quite revealing compaired to 1900's, the dress is sleeveless and the neck line is lower down. The style of this dress is layered and pleatings. The underlayer of the skirt is kind of flared. The colour of this dress is red with floral patterns underneath.

 1900's
The style in 1900s was long dresses with simple patterns. The dresses have pleatings in them and the skirt of the dress is flared out. The colours of the dresses look dull like black, blue and cream which are all natural fibres.
